SCOM2 & OM12 (SP1) Support For Windows Server 2012

On the 4th of September 2012 Windows Server 2012 became General Available (GA). This is awesome since Windows Server 2012 is really a huge improvement compared to Windows Server 2008 R2. Many new features and functionality are added, many things totally revamped, rewritten or modified to a huge extend. This makes Windows Server 2012 an awesome OS which is future ready.

So many companies are looking forward to implement the first batch of Windows Server 2012 boxes in their environments, whether it’s test or production. So good monitoring is required as well of course, so let’s take a look what the various versions of Operations Manager can do here.

  • SCOM R2
    • No support for monitoring Windows Server 2012;
    • No support for installing SCOM R2 server components on Windows Server 2012;
    • No support for installing SCOM R2 Agents on Windows Server 2012;
      • Remark: Only when an OM12 Agent is in place, it can report to a SCOM R2 Management Group as well. Only in upgrade or along side scenarios this approach is valid.

  • OM12
    • Support for monitoring Windows Server 2012;
      • No support for APM (Application Performance Monitoring) of applications based on IIS 8;
    • No support for installing OM12 components on Windows Server 2012;
    • Support for installing OM12 Agents on Windows Server 2012;
      • Remark: No Support for installing OM12 Agents on the Windows 8 client;
    • No support for installing the OM12 Console on the Windows 8;.
  • OM12 SP1
    • Full support of Windows Server 2012 and Windows 8 client.

Even though I do understand that installing SCOM R2 server components on Windows Server 2012 isn’t supported, it’s a pity that SCOM R2 can’t monitor Windows Server 2012 systems. Perhaps Microsoft will do something about it?

Hi Marnix,
Can we address somewhere this issue of SCOM 2007 R2 not supporting monitoring of Windows Server 2007 R2?
I've even wrote a small article:
